Concours Lépine Wins 5 Golds, 7 Silvers, and 17 Bronzes
The Miaoli County Government, hand in hand with local National United University and Yu Da University of Science and Technology, has actively promoted industry-academia-government cooperation with brilliant results. With a 125-year history as the oldest exhibition, the 2026 Concours Lépine (Paris International Invention Exhibition) saw a total of 64 entries from the Concours Lépine Délégation de Taiwan. Among them, 29 works came from Miaoli County's enterprises, teachers, students, and residents, winning a total of 5 golds, 7 silvers, and 17 bronzes. This is the most brilliant achievement in history, demonstrating Miaoli County's strong strength in the field of innovative research and development. Magistrate Chung Tung-chin stated that Miaoli County will continue to strengthen industry-academia-government cooperation with universities. By encouraging SMEs to invest in innovative R&D through the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, Miaoli can first establish itself locally and then link to Paris, achieving twice the result with half the effort in opening up the French and surrounding EU markets, thereby injecting more momentum into Miaoli's innovative R&D field.
As a co-organizer of the "Miaoli County Concours Lépine Award Ceremony," President Hou Di-guang of National United University stated in his speech that San-chuang (creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship) education is the educational approach closest to industrial needs. This year, the university had 15 cross-departmental faculty-student industry-academia co-training achievements exhibited in Paris. Several of them, supported by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the the SBIR programs of the County Government, significantly optimized the speed and depth of R&D. Coupled with the support of the STEM field and female R&D talent training program for universities and colleges for the industrial design department faculty and student team, with the backing of two major ministries, "industry-academia co-training" has been successfully upgraded into a "industry-academia-government co-training" model of international first-class standards. The county government and universities cooperate to play a bridging role, which can efficiently meet the dual needs of industries seeking talent and students seeking jobs.
The SBIR program has contributed immensely behind Miaoli's brilliant achievements this year. Zhan Cai-ping, Director of the Department of Industry and Commerce Development at the County Government, stated that through the infusion of the SBIR program, local enterprises in Miaoli have been able to invest in R&D and transform innovative concepts into products with market potential. For example, Baolun Plastics Co., Ltd. in Gongguan Township cooperated with the Department of Industrial Design faculty and students at National United University. With the support of the SBIR program, they successfully commercialized the "Multi-functional Dish for Easy Bowl Stacking." It not only won a Gold Award at the Concours Lépine but also successfully attracted French and Belgian manufacturers to express their intention for agency representation. This work can effectively reduce the excessive use of plastic wrap, cleverly solving the ecological disaster of marine plastic waste, winning extremely high praise from the French jury, and bringing great glory to Miaoli County and the country.
In addition, the "Metal Multi-way Connector for Easy Construction of Bamboo Scaffolding," a collaboration between HUNG CHERNG METAL CO., LTD. in Tongxiao Town and the Department of Industrial Design at National United University, won a Bronze Award. With the support of this year's SBIR program, the patent concept was successfully turned into a 1:1 physical sample. Furthermore, the "External Pneumatic-Hydraulic Booster Pump" that won a Bronze Award for JIAN XIN MACHINERY CO., LTD. in Yuanli Township was an industry-academia collaboration with Vice President Lung Ching-yung’s team at Yu Da University of Science and Technology. Supported by this year's SBIR program, they also successfully developed machinery with excellent performance, presenting considerable business opportunities.
Particularly worth mentioning is Fulongchang Water Purification Co., Ltd. from Xihu Township, Miaoli County. Founder and Chairman Lin Chih-long transformed an RO reverse osmosis water purifier into a "Low-Temperature Beverage Extraction Machine." Its ice drip coffee, produced under strict cleanroom environmental controls, boasts exceptional flavor. During the Paris exhibition, it successfully conquered the taste buds of French judges and manufacturers, and also attracted a major figure from a French energy group to actively express the intention to become the European general agent. The counterpart has already planned to visit Miaoli personally at the end of September to deeply discuss future cooperation matters. In addition, Chairman Lin Chih-long learned about the SBIR program through participating in the Concours Lépine and has actively applied for this year's program after returning to Taiwan.
Furthermore, Jack Xu, who has served as the leader of the Concours Lépine Délégation de Taiwan for seven years and faces inventors and SMEs from all counties and cities across the country every year, has a particularly objective perspective. He believes that Miaoli County's culture of creation and invention can be said to rank among the top in the nation. A major reason is that every year after returning from the exhibition in Paris, the County Government and National United University jointly hold a commendation press conference, preparing the largest conference hall where the magistrate personally presents medals of encouragement. Such a grand and solemn scene of commending local inventors and manufacturers is rare nationwide, which naturally drives the culture of creation and invention. Most specially, due to the excellent atmosphere of the commendation ceremony held by the Miaoli County Government, many inventors from other counties and cities also came to the scene today, witnessing and sharing the glorious moments of Miaoli County inventors.
Magistrate Chung Tung-chin stated that he was very happy to see the winners of the "Concours Lépine" from both Miaoli County and other counties and cities today. Successfully inventing something is not easy; besides personal talent and interest, the R&D environment is also crucial. We want to thank the guiding units and the professor teams of the two universities, as well as the support of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Ministry of Education, and the cooperation of the county government team, providing inventors with funds and support to help them conduct experiments and research during the invention process. The awarded products this year are all very distinctive, winning a total of 5 gold medals, which proves that Miaoli County is truly rich in talents—Miaoli is a land of pleasant scenery that produces outstanding people. We expect to achieve outstanding results in the Concours Lépine next year. This is not only the glory of the inventors, but also the pride of all Miaoli residents.
